One of BaZi's most powerful — and most misunderstood — tools is the system of Luck Phases (大运, Dà Yùn). These are 10-year cycles that shift the elemental landscape of your chart, dramatically influencing the opportunities and challenges available to you in each decade of life.

Unlike your natal chart (which is fixed at birth), your Luck Phases evolve throughout your lifetime — each one bringing a new Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch that either supports or strains your Day Master.

How Luck Phases Are Calculated

The calculation of Da Yun is one of the more sophisticated aspects of BaZi. It begins with the Month Pillar of your birth chart and moves forward or backward through the Chinese calendar (depending on your gender and whether you were born in a Yang or Yin year). Each Luck Phase covers approximately 10 years and is represented by a two-character pillar — a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch.

The transition age at which your first Luck Phase begins varies — it can be anywhere from 1 to 10 years old, calculated from the distance in the calendar between your birth date and the nearest solar term. This means no two people experience their luck phases at exactly the same ages, even siblings born in the same year.

What Makes a "Good" Luck Phase?

A favorable Luck Phase is one that provides what your natal chart lacks. If your Day Master is weak, a Luck Phase that strengthens it (by providing the elements that generate or support your Day Master) will tend to be a period of growth, opportunity, and achievement. If your Day Master is already strong, a phase that provides the elements that channel or control it (preventing excess) will similarly be beneficial.

An unfavorable Luck Phase is one that either excessively overwhelms your Day Master, removes the supports it needs, or amplifies existing imbalances in the chart. These periods tend to bring greater friction, setbacks, and the need for more careful navigation.

The 5 Years Within Each Phase

Within each 10-year Luck Phase, the first five years are governed by the Heavenly Stem (the upper character) and the second five years by the Earthly Branch (the lower character). This means that even within a generally favorable or unfavorable decade, the experience shifts meaningfully between the first and second halves.

Real-World Timing: How It Shows Up

BaZi practitioners and their clients frequently observe that major life transitions — career breakthroughs, relationship milestones, health events, financial windfalls or losses — correlate remarkably well with Luck Phase transitions. These are not random moments; they are the moments when the energetic landscape of the chart changes most dramatically.

Understanding your Luck Phases doesn't mean passively waiting for good times to arrive or hiding during difficult ones. It means:

Annual and Monthly Influences

Overlaid on the 10-year Luck Phases are annual pillars (the Chinese year animal + element) and monthly pillars. These create a layered energetic picture: your natal chart is the foundation, your Luck Phase is the decade-long weather, and the annual and monthly pillars are the day-to-day and week-to-week fluctuations within that climate.

A year that contains elements which resonate positively with both your natal chart and your current Luck Phase is often experienced as a particularly fruitful one. A year whose elements clash with your chart and current phase is often one that requires more care and patience.
